Question: if you had to interact with the IRS due to a problem or an audit, do you want the person to be competent?

Alternate proposal: take the job at the IRS. Be fantastic at your job. Change the culture of the organization from within.

You are misjudging what I mean by "bad at your job"

If I had to interact with the IRS I would love to get assigned an agent who believed taxation is just a pretty word for armed robbery and was determined to destroy the beast from within.
