What reasoning & logic is it to say that X is better & the best? & then when something comes along that is better to still hold that position?

Is it that someone has convinced themselves for so long of X that it becomes part of who they are & so to deny X denies themselves?

Why has such a human trait existed for, seemingly, so long?
