In the game of Chess there is a strategy called a "sacrifice". Theoretically, you tempt your opponent to make a fatal move by offering them a valuable piece. There's nothing more disappointing in the game, including loosing, than making a sacrifice and failing to make the gain for which you had hoped.
Somewhere, I suspect some in the ruling class are suffering in the same way over these banks. They might have been an acceptable losses had they managed to destroyed Bitcoin.
Instead, they've dramatically demonstrated it's strength.
