3D printing - is it truly useful at this point? (Or just a gimmick for making toys?)

I'm thinking of getting into 3D, but wanted to get some opinions as to how folks are really using their printers...I can see some usefulness beyond the "toys" that seem to populate thingiverse, but wanted to get opinions.

I've 3D printed multiple guns 😅

Also great for parts that are hard to find like little fasteners or custom cases for something. The more CAD experience you have, the more useful it will be.

What CAD software would you recommend? (Only running Linux, so would have to work on that platform). FreeCAD seems like an option, but just starting to investigate. Any opinions welcome.

(Thinking of the Bambu A1 to start off...)

OpenSCAD for making parts with parameters you can change later. FreeCAD and libreCAD are options.

Looks like FreeCAD might be my best choice to start. OpenSCAD seems more programmatic and less visual...might move into that though later (as I can see the benefits). Just need to get started I think...

libreCAD is 2D (no?) so again maybe a bit harder to visualize a 3D model from that for me....
