Grow lots of different lettuce. I have 20 or so varieties plus some that have hybridized which im hopefully creating new varieties from. I like doing almost all my lettuce from tramsplants. I sell at a local farmers market.

So say I have an area that's about 5x20 filled with grass. How would you prepare it to grow a crop of a variety of lettuces? When do should I start seeds (zone7) and look to transplant?

2 options. The lawn is going to be a real pain in the ass. To get it ready asap you can either cut the sod out or smother it. Cutting it out will remove the grass rhizomes and roots nut removes some good topsoil. To smother look up "lasanga beds". Involves laying down thick cardboard, followed by layers of compost, soil, woodchips, etc. This is a bit tricky to plant lettuce into. It would be easier with larger plants like squash. Hth
