It sounds bombastic, but it makes sense when you think about the fact that 2% more is mined every year.
I just used excel to work out 100 increased by 2% 170 times (for the number of years since 1850), and the result is 2897 with the latest increase being 57. So it's not far off.

Yea. I don't know why I said I used excel, or even did. Could just done 100*1.02^170 🤪
I suppose I wouldn't have been able to easily see the increase per year then so it makes more sense.
