We've been interested in buying a drone, just to fly it around our property, or to find little Daisy when she gets lost in the woods. But it should be fun to get some info about them. Having a south facing window or at least some source of sunlight helps. My houseplants are miserable; the backyard is south facing and it's all blocked by tall trees. Makes for a pleasant yard for humans to lounge in even during the heat of the summer, but not ideal for growing much. 3 dogs that'll destroy anything in their wake doesn't exactly open up many options.
I have been at least looking for somewhere more in front/on the sides to put some comfrey in to maybe try my hand at some soaps/salves. Got into making my own tallow a few months ago and it doesn't look like too much of a jump to start using it for things other than food. And if there's a plant I won't likely kill, comfrey seems like it. Though it may need to battle off some japanese knotweed...
Yeah, indoors its pretty tough for most plants. But there are lots of greens and herbs that will do well in pots that you could move around for the best light.
The best luck I've had was using my Aerogarden hydroponic device given that it doesn't need to worry about sunlight. We've got a few houseplants hanging on as close as possible to the south facing windows for the bits of light they can get through the trees but none of them look particularly vibrant.

What‘s a good starter crop? I would give bucket a spin but I don‘t have much experience with growing food.. :)
Depends on where you live and also the weather in your area. For us its time for greens like swiss chard and spinach. Also garlic and onions. You could ask around and find your local gardeners what to plant now, or check with your local extension office. They are pretty helpful.
