The way we pronounce the words change so much from generation to generation it's hard to keep a accurate spelling.

All those words are like a 500 years old and from root words thousands of years old.

English Bomb likely from the French: bombe from Italian Bomba from Latin bombus. At which time there was no English or French.

We read by symbols The phenetic spelling is there to help learn the symbol.

In Chinese they just use the symbol directly and drop the phenetic spelling after memorizing a symbol. But the symbols can change pronunciation by context.

长 could be chang3 for the word "long" or when used in 校长 it becomes Zhang3 for. (principal)

Japanese is similar.

You can design a better spelling but it would devolve over a hundred years.
