- thought it was fixed and the blockchain was showing like 93% dowloaded but then it seems like the bitcoin app got stuck

- don’t know whyy i didn’t think about this the first time but I went back and deleted all the files in the new umbrel folder except the app-data and then copied over the entire umbrel folder from the old SSD

- now it seems like the bitcoin app is stuck in the “starting” mode again… guess I will have to come back to this next weekend

- turns out I just needed to wait longer and the bitcoin node eventually sync'd overnight

- Then the lightning node app was getting stuck when opening (the progress bar would just stop about halfway through). So I deleted the app and re-dowloaded it, but to do that I also had to delete the LNbits app

- almost forgot about this but had to recover my bitcoin/LN wallets by putting my seed phrase (good thing I found it). but then it took me to a tab to choose a channel backup file but wouldn’t let me upload it until the LN node syncs, which took about a day

- had to download my channel backup file from my old SSD to my phone (there were some backup files showing up on the umbrel app but none of them were dated from when my node actually went down so i went and found the backup file (there was only one) in the app-data folder in the lightning folder on my old SSD), when i uploaded it to the lightning app it said all channels were closing and it would take 2 days to reflect in my balance. this was probably my bad but i sorta forgot how much exactly I had in my lightning node so not sure if I got back what I should have. Also did not know recovering from channel backup auto force closes all your channels

- Finally I re-copied my app-data folder for LNbits back onto the new SSD and all my accounts, family's accounts were still there and automatically working again with Zeus

- sents some zaps over nostr and confirmed we are operational again!🙏🏼

Overall thoughts:

- that took pretty long (node was down from 3/6 - 3/21)

- i might have lost some money on lightning

- it was harder than I thought and had to iterate multiple times at many of the steps, but in the end was able to figure it out without reading any specific guide or video so I guess it wasn’t that bad

what I should do next time (for my own future reference, also I don’t know if this is the *right* way, it’s just what worked for me):

- buy new SSD (usb-c connection seems to be working just fine)

- plug into the rPi straight out of the box and start umbrel

- after initializing/startup use umbrel.local to shutdown

- use separate computer to transfer the umbrel folder from old SSD to new SSD. 1) “sudo rm -r /media/*usr*/umbrel/umbrel” (delete umbrel folder in new SSD); 2) “sudo rsync -ah —progress /media/*usr*/umbrel1(OLD)/umbrel /media/*usr*/umbrel” (copy umbrel folder from old SSD to new SSD) [takes about 1 day]

- plug the new SSD back into rPi, go to umbrel.local, login using your old password, delete the lightning app and any connected apps (all channels will force close and you will need seed phrase to recover), go to app store to re-download lightning app and LNbits, re-open lightning app and enter seed phrase, wait for LN node to sync [takes about 1 day]

- while you’re waiting for the LN node to sync, find the channel.backup file on the old SSD and find a way to get it on your phone

- once the LN node is synced, upload the channel backup file (although I’m not sure if this is necessary)

- shutdown again and bring new SSD back to the other computer. 1) “sudo rm -r /media/*usr*/umbrel/umbrel/app-data/LNbits” (delete umbrel folder in new SSD); 2) “sudo rsync -ah —progress /media/*usr*/umbrel1(OLD)/umbrel/app-data/LNbits /media/*usr*/umbrel/app-data” (copy LNbits folder from old SSD to new SSD)

- plug new SSD back into rPi, start it up, open new LN channels, and you should be good to go!

Questions remaining:

- how could I verify the amount of sats I should have recovered from the force closed channels?

- would it have been possible for the channel peer to take more sats than were actually on their side of the channel since I was not online to dispute during the channel closures?
