In fact, it's a consistent trait of Shonen Rivals that they're more interesting than the main character, they work harder than the main character, they're more driven than the main character, yet the main character still ends up on top because Plot.
In order to merely remain *relevant*, a Rival character has to 1) go to insane, life-threatening lengths to increase his power, 2) be so desperate to surpass the MC that it makes him mentally unhinged, and 3) for a period of time straight up become a villain for increased plot focus and new powerups.
Meanwhile, the MC just has to occasionally train and find inner peace or some shit.
