I mean, yes, #IRC has been absolutely reliable for decades now - and that's literal. But just relying on one protocol should never be the option, which is why I daily-drive #Matrix - both for bridges to Telegram and others, and to talk to people - even on IRC. Having a stable backbone is not the be-all-end-all, imho. It's part of the bigger picture, a failsafe if you will.

To be honest, #IRC is only still used, because old schoolers are used to it too much & get the occasional newcomer with ideological arguments on board.

There's no point in using #IRC in 2023, considering all the alternatives. #Matrix is one of those well made replacements.

That said, you are correct, that you should spread around, rather than going all-in onto a single technology.
