I've just finished Matthew Barrett's excellent _Simply Trinity: The Unmanipulated Father, Son, and Holy Spirit_ and recommend it highly (especially as a follow-up to his _None Greater: The Undomesticated Attributes of God_).

People have been _manipulating_ the doctrine of the Trinity for a very long time but, in recent decades, they have done so for certain political or social agendae. After a much-needed Nicean "reset"--drawing on Augustine, the Cappadocian Fathers, and giants like Calvin, Owen, Turretin, and Bavinck (among many others--Barrett reminds us that "The Trinity is _not_ our social program." (And he names names.) Whether that social agenda be socialism, or the 'green' movement, gender roles, or some other thing--that is not what the doctrine of the Trinity is _for_. The proper end of all our theology is doxology (reverance, awe, and worship).
