Russia pummels exhausted Ukrainian forces with smaller attacks ahead of a springtime advance

==========

Russian troops are increasing pressure on exhausted Ukrainian forces to seize more land in spring and summer. They are using satellite-guided gliding bombs to attack Ukrainian forces. The Ukrainian forces are facing a shortage of troops and are struggling to halt Russian advances. Last summer, Ukrainian units got trapped on Russian minefields and were massacred. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy ordered the construction of defensive lines, but the work moved slowly, leaving areas unprotected. Russian troops are targeting the hill town of Chasiv Yar and the city of Kharkiv. Ukraine does not have enough air defense to protect Kharkiv. Russia is also targeting power plants in the area to destroy infrastructure and force residents to leave. If Congress does not approve more military aid, Ukraine will be outgunned 10 to one by Russia in a matter of weeks. After securing another term, Russian President Vladimir Putin vowed to carve out a "sanitary zone" to protect Russian border regions from Ukrainian shelling and incursions. Russia could also try to capture the city of Kharkiv. Russia has recruited 540,000 volunteers in 2023 to beef up its forces. There are no plans for a new wave of mobilization. Russia is using smaller attacks across the front line to further drain the Ukrainian military.
