Imprisoning a person seems to me like the most desperate solution, one that does not compensate the victimโ€”instead, it indirectly forces them to pay for the costs of incarceration. I understand that there are situations where, as a society, we don't know how to handle it differently, but it should be only a handful of people, with the awareness that this is a suboptimal solution and with the hope that we will soon find a better one.

If a country specializes in imprisoning people, it feels like modern-day slavery to me. And the relative number of prisoners could serve as an index of that cultureโ€™s backwardness.

fun fact is, it doesn't work

it even doesn't make sense in most cases

it's commonly accepted torture in society that claims torture is immoral
