I've met people who run massive Mastadon instances. They're drowning. They really want something distributeso the costs and governance be shared over the userbase.

Image hosting adds up fast. Also PubSub is very bloated.

And if you have a space anyone can write into that had a domain name and an address, that's a lot of liability. IIRC there was a Mastadon node for sex worker's and it shutdown because the liability went criminal in the USA. Look what happened to the Backpage founders.
