Burglars broken into my next door neighbor's house the past weekend while they were away and took everything of value (money, jewelry, electronics).
My wife now feels abit uncomfortable even though we really have nothing worth stealing.
I've since did some research and decided to use an old android phone as a makeshift alarm system using Haven. Seems promising, we'll see how it goes.
Get two fire arms.
Both of you get training on them.
Get a door bell camera.
Get internal cameras.
Feel safe.
Firearms are illegal where I live. I want to 3d print them but need more time and research. For now knives and a crowbar would have to suffice.
Regarding cameras, I wouldn't trust anything that wasn't FOSS and that I didn't setup myself, don't want any Ring spyware in my home. Haven on an old android phone kind of does that job (I hope).

I'm sorry to hear about that situation. It sucks being made to feel vulnerable though you have a smart head on approaching it. I'm not sure if you're prepared for firearms but there's nothing like knowing you have it available and knowing how to use it. If you're not there yet I'd recommend at least looking at that direction. It's saved my life in the past.
Thanks for making a post about Haven though. I thought I had heard of the project before but I don't think it was the same one. After looking over Haven I'm going to set one up myself. This is a game changing project for simple home security if it's as good as it seems to be from reading over the project page.

I'm not american but still believe I'm the right and need to self defend. No one is advocating for shooting intruders as a first recourse. That is a very reductionist argument.

They do seem to have the reputation for shoot first and ask questions later however.
Met an American couple who told us a story of how they almost shot their daughter who no longer lived at home but had a key and came home one night to stay.
All sounds good when you say it fast but can't imagine how much shit one has to go through even it it was a burglar they shot and not the daughter!
