Totally agree - and surely the future is relays that require a regular payment. As that’s the only format that reflects the underlying costs and effort of running one?

Absolutely. I can only see three options in the long run:
1) Small, quasi private free community relays
2) Paid public relays
3) Ad sponsored public relays
Good thing is: We as the users will have the choice! There is no "bad type" of relay.
