I have a heavy woolen cape. Then a vintage black velvet cape, the hood is trimmed in rabbit fur that I’ve used for formal occasions. It’s easier to keep your arms warm in a coat than when wearing a cape. Probably why they went out of fashion. Production methods also improved allowing making fitted coats easier.
