I find it interesting that it happened at more or less the same time as the bots arriving.

Wonder if it’s individual/group or nation based?
I would assume the volume of increased note loading via the HNY bots on clients and their indexers is causing a resource issue not an actual DDoS attack. But that's just a guess.
Makes sense. Some disruption to zapping appears to be afoot too.
