Ours was liberal and free too... but not in that way. I used to joke about how asexual the culture was. Not that people didn't hook up, but waaay less than other subcultures. (I usually had a steady girlfriend at home, so not a problem).
Did you guys drink alcohol much in the scene? Maybe that's the difference...
No, mainly just chill out drugs, coke, ecstasy that type of thing … had to keep dancing all night then head to the day clubs for more dancing!

I don’t know about that, to keep going day and night and day and night racked up a lot of drugs and funds 🤣
probably the difference was psychedelics then, it's not that you can't or don't want to do social things it's it's far less interesting
coke and amphetamines and mdma don't make for the same kind of party as one where half the people are on 2 blotters of purple buddha or so... red dragons... DOB, psilocybin
