But if I communicate with someone on one Mastodon instance from nostr and then talk to someone on a different one it looks like it automatically creates a new account for each one. Thatโs kind of a terrible UX.

It's harder to find rando cool people. Maybe easier on Nostr since the crowd is a little smaller. But I usually read a blog post, then see if the author is on Nostr or Masto.

I mostly just stay away. Every time I go to Mastodon I feel like Iโm using my outside voice in a library.
