I just helped a family member set up a Roku Ultra since their smart tv suddenly became unsupported and cannot connect to some central server before streaming works.

While i used to recommend them, Roku has gone downhill. Thumbsdown product review:

- The new remote uses a rechargeable battery.

- The new remote, as explained during setup, always records audio for "data collection purposes" unless you opt out by switching off a physical switch on the side of the remote. It's green colored when in always-collecting mode.

- You cannot use the device without setting up an account with Roku and connecting a payment method.

You can jailbreak an NVIDIA Shield fairly easily and use the TVBro browser and the PipePipe app to watch practically anything you like.

I'm sufficiently technical to be able to figure out such things, but I needed to get the simplest device possible for this person. I had previously gotten them a Chromecast, but even the phone-as-a-remote was too much.
