Happy Feast Day of Saint Michael!

Bl. Pope Pius IX had such a great devotion to St. Michael that he is referred to as the Pope of St. Michael the Archangel During his Pontificate, he fought against revolutionaries and secret societies plotting the downfall of the Papal States and the Papacy itself.

Bl. Pius IX drew insight and strength in this fight through his devotion to St. Michael. According to him "St. Michael, is most able to exterminate the evil sects, born of Satan, that have sworn to ruin Christian society".

His devotion was so strong that in 1851 he approved the St. Michael Rosary from the vision of the Portuguese Carmelite nun, Antonia d’Astonaco, and granted it indulgences. Recieving private revelations, the nun said that St. Michael promised those who keep this devotion his continuous assistance and that one angel of each of the nine celestial choirs would accompany you when approaching Holy Communion.

Bl. Pius IX would often promote St. Michael's rosary in his audience's with the Papal Zouaves. Instilling in their unit a devotion to the Saint.

In 1878, Bl. Pius IX gave his blessing for the wearing of the St. Michael scapular that was being promoted by the Archconfraternity of the Scapular of Saint Michael. Which was founded that same year in the Church of Sant'Eustachio at Rome.
