Big change does always come as a "surprise" to most people. If they had heard about it (e.g. btc) they either did not understand it and followed the public opinion or they thought it would take longer so they could jump on later still.

Big change (aka. real innovation that improves life for a majority of people significantly) appears usually as a "hockey stick" moment.

Gradually, then suddenly....
