There is a great section in “Technofeudalism” by Yanis Varoufakis that discusses why the US government wants to ban TikTok. It makes for interesting reading.
Note: this was published in 2023.
I can highly recommend the book.

Interesting, indeed. Yet, Mr Varoufakis has no interest, nor deeper knowledge about Bitcoin.
There is a small section in the book about crypto.
In it he states that he read the Bitcoin white paper back in 2008. He was initially very interested as it resolves many issues with the fiat system.
His issue seems to be that it is not used enough as currency and that it will be hoarded as capital, and thereby become subject to the whims of Wall Street and big Tech conglomerates. Which if we look at what is happening at the moment with Saylor etc, he has a right to be concerned, as this is the opposite of what the freedom tech currency was supposed to be about.
I don’t think he’s written it off he’s just concerned with where he sees it heading.
Pump and dump schemes with many other cryptocurrencies/nfts have not helped bitcoin’s cause.
He's right at that, I think so, too. We need to make sure BTC is moving ... freely!
However, last interview I saw of him speak about Bitcoin about a year ago, he talked it down too easily, said it's not gonna be successful because the state won't allow taxes to be paid in it. Still a believer in violence I concluded.
👍 States happy to tax it though 🙄
Will be interesting to see what happens in the future if BTC does move more into the currency space. Governments may need to reconsider.
If a few Governments move into that space and aren’t adversely impacted, others will likely follow. I’m guessing a lot of smaller countries would be watching El Salvador at the moment.
Big changes take time - slowly and then suddenly 🙂
