My eldest is a senior this year, but my youngest still has two more years of highschool.

My last job was in automotive and I had *at least* an hour commute one-way, so I was gone nearly 12 hours a day. I took a $6/hr paycut to get a third shift job (knew I wouldn't get day shift) closer to home so I could spend time with my kids.

I know by the time they turn 18 I've spent 95% of the time I'll have with them. All I'll have left is holidays.

My current job just announced, last Friday, that they're eliminating third shift and I'll be moving to seconds in either May or June.

So, I'll probably be switching to a new job in either May or June.

If I move to seconds, I won't see my son, except for weekends and summer break, for the next two years. If I'm going to lose that time with him anyways, I might as well take a 2nd shift job somewhere else with better pay/benefits.

Automotive has taken a big hit the last few years. An hour commute wouldn't be fun but you get use to it.

Myself, I wouldn't drive 45 minutes for a $6 raise.

Do you guys do subassembly (engines, transmissions) or final assembly?

Till you move in with one of them and their families to ride out the rest of your life. Before they put you in a home.
