This is the story of two software developers who built LEGAL privacy tools (according to a ruling from FINCEN) for Bitcoin and are now facing 5 years in jail and millions in legal fees due to a hit job by the southern district of NY.
We HAVE to get these two men a presidential pardon. Not only did they do nothing wrong but the legal precedent is already having a chilling effect on open source software developers.
By the logic used to prosecute them, Signal Messenger App and thousands of other companies would be responsible for any illicit use of their software. Criminals use software. They also use phones and roads but we don’t prosecute the builders of those tools. Further more, the “crime” they are accused of was committed by an FBI agent in order to develop the case and then they raiding these men’s homes with 50 armed agents.
This is unacceptable in a free society.
