Maybe it's the temperature worms die at.

Is it terrible if it goes above 160 or is it just slower?

Worms seem to be good at getting out of the way of such temperatures. Somehow they find their way in after though.

Above 160 beneficial microbes die. It can make the pile go anaerobic. That's generally a bad thing as the life inside that we want like oxygen.
