St. George was born to a Greek Christian noble family in Lydda in Palestine and became an officer in the Roman army.
In the year 302 AD. the Emperor Diocletian issued an edict that every Christian soldier in the army should be arrested and every other soldier should offer a sacrifice to the Roman gods of the time.
However, George objected, and and in front of his fellow soldiers he claimed himself to be a Christian and declared his worship of Jesus Christ. Diocletian attempted to convert George, even offering gifts of land, money and slaves if he made a sacrifice to the Roman gods.
George never accepted and was executed by decapitation in the Greek city of Nicomedia in Asia Minor, on 23rd April 303. His body was returned to his birthplace of Lydda for burial, where Christians soon came to honour him as a martyr.
The episode of St. George and the Dragon was a legend brought back with the Crusaders.
In the legend, a dragon or crocodile makes its nest at the spring that provides water for the city of “Silene”. Consequently, the citizens have to dislodge the dragon from its nest for a time, to collect water. To do so, each day they offer the dragon at first a sheep, and if no sheep can be found, then a maiden is the best substitute for one. The victim is chosen by drawing lots.
One day, this happens to be the princess. The king begs for her life to be spared, but to no avail. She is offered to the dragon, but then St. George appears on his travels. He faces the dragon, protects himself with the sign of the cross, slays the dragon, and rescues the princess. The citizens abandon their ancestral paganism and convert to Christianity.
He did not rise to the position of “patron saint” of England until the 14th century, and he was still obscured by Edward the Confessor, the traditional patron saint of England, until the Reformation in 1552.
The “Colours of Saint George” are a white flag with a red cross.
St. George’s emblem was adopted by King Richard The Lion Heart and brought to England in the 12th century.
His cross forms the national flag of England, and features within the Union Flag of the United Kingdom.
