For example, if I see an imposter @jack, I know they are not the real @jack because the checkmark isn’t purple (on damus) - telling me that this is not the @jack I followed originally. Furthermore, look at where @jack is verified to - cash.app - unless you own that domain name, no way you can verifying to it. Whether or not this benefits you is another story.
Iris does checkmarks by follow distance. Nip05 is DNS based and imo too centralized and unaccessible to some.
