I recently made a similar mistake, I’ve learned HDDs are no bueno for Bitcoin nodes. I’d guess it was the constant seek time for old transactions that was the bottleneck.
Once it’s sync’d they’re ok. Strongly suggest backing up things like fulcrum server Db’s
