-THE ISLAND LIFE-

The Castello di Roccascalegna is a defensive structure located in the town of Roccascalegna, in the province of Chieti, Italy. Perched on top of a rocky outcrop, overlooking the town, it has ancient origins and underwent various additions between the 16th and 17th centuries.

A legend associated with the castle involves the enforcement of the so-called "Ius primae noctis" law: according to this legend, in 1646, the castle's baron, Corvo de Corvis, attempted to apply this law, which required all the women in the village to spend their wedding night with him instead of their newlywed husbands.

It is said that the last bride, or the legitimate husband disguised in her attire, ascended to the castle for the planned consummation and ended up stabbing the baron. As he died, he left a bloodied handprint on a rock.
