EU has been sleeping regarding defense for years relying on US while completely ignoring Russia warnings about the Nato expansion, now EU has no chance of backing Ukraine even less with US pulling out. EU and Ukraine should try to reach a peace agreement, they will have to concede, it's the price to pay for being arrogant and asleep over the years.
