I suspect most non devs don't understand what a protocol is or how it functions. I don't.

Is it worth explaining? The web is based on HTTP, it's a succesfull and ubiquitous protocol, meaning that it "just works" everywhere and on everything, which hyperlinks gluing it all together. Nostr, is an extension of http, so another web protocol, meaning it inherits the large network effect of HTTP. That is the reason it works. If it was a new protocol, rather than a sub protocol, it would likely never have taken off.
i have only a rudimentary understanding of http and nostr. theoretically speaking, if getting it to take off weren’t an issue, would there be a better way to build the internet from the ground up with an entirely new protocol?
Is it the relays which essentially enable the protocol to exist by enabling apps to read and write new data?
Yes. While, technically relays just transmit data from one user to another. But for now, they also store the data. We should have (a long time ago) had both transport and storage as first-class in nostr. Again resistance there. So, for now, relays are the facilitators. But that is a niche proposition. We can do much more.

Les relais derrièrement par exemple on s'est retrouvé à devoir opter pour des trucs qu'on ne maîtrise guère et lesquels et est cela ne devrait relever de ceux qui l'ont mis en place ou nous dire comment il faudrait faire. Ils découragent les normies puis passerait son temps à faire du #asknosk à tout bloquage en attendant on n'émet pas des notes et on se penche pas à mettre en place des outils qui peuvent être utiles à la communauté
