Back when I was younger I used to think that the world could function without borders. Of course, had I given that idea any thought at all I would have realized that’s a dream.

If thousands of years of warfare have told us anything it’s that:

1. People do not like to be ruled by distant rulers

2. People do not wish to be ruled by people who don’t share their culture

3. People do not wish to be taxed by people living across oceans

4. Governance is hard, all mega empires eventually collapse

5. It’s impossible to stop people fighting over resources

A world without borders is literally impossible because of human nature. We have to belong, we have to have leaders we approve of and we like to preserve our own culture despite that culture being diluted ever more.

Had it been possible, we would have already lived in a border-less world.

Gotta love the naive young mind.

“When a man is born...there are nets flung at it to hold it back from flight. You talk to me of nationality, language, religion. I shall try to fly by those nets.” -- James Joyce

“This is obvious and if you disagree I don’t respect you” is not exactly a conversation starter.
