THE IDEOLOGICAL CIRCUS OF WASHED-UP ARTISTS

Brazil is currently facing a democracy in name only — a fragile façade where power is abused to control narratives, intimidate dissent, and co-opt artists into ideological submission. Instead of standing for freedom of expression, many performers have become mouthpieces for the regime, repeating the same worn-out slogans as if that were the price of survival in today’s cultural scene.

The latest example? The band IRA — once respected in the 80s — interrupted their own concert to bash Bolsonaro and praise Lula. A concert! A place meant for music, not political brainwashing. Their act was not a call for unity, but an insult to the intelligence of a paying crowd that came for art, not activism.

This isn’t an isolated embarrassment. Several artists are following this same pathetic script, forgetting that the audience is diverse and deserves respect — not lectures. What’s the result? Empty venues. Sponsors walking away. Fans tuning out. And still, they pretend to be victims, blind to the fact that the public is sick of being manipulated.

Art should challenge, inspire, and provoke thought — not serve as a megaphone for partisan propaganda. Turning the stage into a political pulpit is spitting in the face of those who think differently. If you’re an artist who uses your platform to bully others into your ideology, maybe it’s time to pack it up. The curtain is calling. Let it fall.
