I’d love to check it out! I hadn’t heard of PirateBox before now but I just (mostly) finished revamping my whole setup for sailing the high seas. I’m a big fan of NixOS, so I used a couple NixOS containers. One does all the work and the other is a “sidecar” that only allows the first one to have internet access via a privacy VPN interface. If that connection is down, it effectively kills the internet access to the main container, concealing my real IP, which is nice.

That’s a good point. I probably should have clarified, I wasn’t optimizing for absolute privacy in this case. Performance was a factor as well, so I chose to go with one of the VPN services that offers port forwarding. I’m able to get the level of privacy I need for what I’m doing and between 2x and 5x higher speeds than anything else I tried.
