Is there a human impulse to be too readily willing to delegate the weight of responsibility to third persons or institutions when it comes to custody one's wealth ?

Galbreith:

"Bank of Amsterdam - second sound bank in history (no loans allowed) - 1627 - Louis XIV. approached Amsterdam - alarm - merchants suspected, that their money was no longer in the bank - checked - it was still there, who sought their money were paid - suddenly they no longer wanted it back from the bank."

why do we think. that ppl want to self-custody ?
