Simple answer: The out of the box paid node solution currently only supports this model. 😊 Agree, this will not be sustainable in the long run.
Why is the paid relay model a 1 time fee? Seems like the incentive to rug eventually would be strong

As long as it’s mainly bitcoin plebs it’s cheap to run. If this shit scales to twitter level, good luck running it for free
