Been running DeepSeek-R1 locally in Apple silicon for about a week. Installed just before this hype hit.

The model description states:

“deepseek-r1

DeepSeek's first-generation of reasoning models with comparable performance to OpenAI-o1, including six dense models distilled from DeepSeek-R1 based on Llama and Qwen.”

So it is based on Llama, Meta/Facebook’s own open source AI model that has been around for a long time. Why all the hype?

God, this market needs at hero narrative.
