They were decieved into accepting a system that steals wealth through inflation. Had they been more diligent it may not have happened. They have also benefited from being early in the debt Ponzi and generally support it's continuance to ensure their asset price continues to grow.

In short, personal responsibility for providing for future generations was abdicated to government.
