How are likes created on damus when I can't see them anywhere else? Are they separate notes or is it just some metadata stored specifically on damus server?

They are just separate notes with a different kind. Text notes are kind 1. Likes are kind 7.
Is kind 7 defined somewhere or is it new? Just noticed https://github.com/nostr-protocol/nips/blob/master/README.md and it goes up to 5
It's new, I haven't spec'd it yet
