I mean, I followed the docs and had it working, then it stopped working. And now I must pay.

What? No not if you're running your own relay... You can post to wheat without payment too, I just won't keep your events forever unless you pay me a bit.

does NIP05 require a relay?

I thought it was just an call to a website JSON file to confirm the address for search?

No nip5 doesn't need a relay. But anyone with a NIP5 at happytavern is whitelisted for wheat.
