Instead of picking and choosing relays, we should be charging 1 sat to reply or DM. I don't want to figure out which relay filters stuff. I'm not doing it, I won't do it, and no sane non-dev is going to do it. If, on the hand, spammers had to pay 1 sat, and we all enabled that option, then they won't be able to keep up any meaningful spam attack.
Can we do this? Am I just missing something everyone already does?

Mweh. Too simplistic of an approach in my humble opinion.
First of all it's technically challenging to charge for a reply/DM. The amount of negotiation to get a DM/reply through will kill the user experience.
Secondly I don't think this is a guarantee for no spam/nasty stuff. Over time you'll find yourself looking for relays with a higher admission fee than 1 sat because some spammer has figured it out.
Why are you reading DM's from people you don't follow?
Just use a WoT relay and you don't need to think anymore.
I'm just using common relays and I hardly see any spam.
No one DMs me. I included that because it appears some people use that function.
The idea isn't to stop spam entirely - just make it costly to do at scale.
If something being technically challenging was a reason not to do it, we wouldn't have nostr at all, or most things.
