I think Imran Khan's Pashtun identity is being severely underestimated as a contributing factor to his overthrow. Both the ISI and US probably felt he had overstayed his welcome after the Taliban victory and its turning against the Pakistani state.

He had to work on his midlife identity for decades. His "youth" was wild and transforming from that to his Pashtun identity required a lot. That scares the establishment as the acceptance to that new identity required the blessing of and loyalty to a very differemt power cemter, one they fear.
