Busy couple of days, so belated garden update.

I’ve taken advantage of the change in the weather to plant out some squash plants, adding next to them a tetrapak with holes made in it along the side facing the plant, which supposedly makes deep watering easier.

You can also see the difference between my indoor, lovingly tended, started-under-lights-at-the-start-of-April runner beans and the ones where I just plonked some seeds in at the same time as I planted them out. I think I’ll be direct sowing my rubber beans in future, here.

Similarly with the peas: 6-9 o’clock were lovingly nurtured from early March and planted out mid-April, 9-12 late March / mid-April, 12-3 were direct sown mid-April and 3-6 late May. What I’ve harvested so far were from the first two batches, but the first one in particular is never going to produce enough to justify the space / effort.

My broadbeans (fava)… no picture, too depressing. They were starting to get blackfly, as they do, so I made up a washing up liquid (dish soap) spray, as you do, and two days later the leaves were covered in black streaks. I’m not sure if the very hot sun or the fact that I used blue Fairy (antibacterial) is the problem, but I’m hoping they will manage to put on new growth. The blackfly are gone, so yay for that?
