I was playing around with Primal IOS and it seems to me like there is no way to connect a (my) lightning wallet and you have to buy sats through Apple pay and then use the lightning wallet Primal assigns you? Am I missing something?

Partially correct. You have to use the built in wallet for sending zaps. However you can set any wallet you like for receiving in your profile. And you don’t have to buy sats through Apple Pay. You can just send sats into the wallet from any other lightning wallet.
