The big divide in the US is between merit and rent-seeking. For rent-seekers, toeing the ideological line is extremely important. For merit-seekers it's doing/being/creating the best. In a sense, I'm surprised this battle came so early because this battle is Bitcoin vs. Fiat in a nutshell.

Funny think is that most people I know supporting merit-based systems, and even voting for Trump, are rent seekers.
Going where the incentives lead in a fiat world will do that to people.
I could farm crops, and produce more, but if I just play with the market instead I end up with more food. And just because I know this isn't productive doesn't change the fact that at the end of the day, I'd like more food.

Some folks can also go from building to rent seeking themselves with age - thinking of consultants and conf speakers that used to build shit and now just rent seek.
