Cynically, I believe that the left wing power brokers don't care how many lives they're destroying because those people will be medical basket cases for the rest of their lives making them a reliable demographic for health topics as well as childless activists.
The right wing will again serve as a useful foil when the left gives an insincere apology and 'tries to fix' the problem they created.
