Ok so I do love #[0]​ Jade - but what’s to prevent them from implementing (or being forced to implement) the same key sharding clownery as Ledger?

Or is the issue more about open source - with Jade being open source, they could implement this anytime that wanted but users would know about immediately - whereas with ledger, being closed, there are questions as to how voluntary this whole key sharding business actually is…

The latter. If you build it yourself and review the code then you have a signing device that potentially never needs an update to do what you need it to do. It should function like a calculator. Jade does have bluetooth though which is a tradeoff IMO.
